Proven Performance Benefits In Multiple Studies With Simulated Equine Training

Sporting edge icon

A comprehensive study with thoroughbred horses confirmed that the same biological adaptations occur in horses exactly as they do in humans – where multiple studies already document the remarkable changes that occur. Active Altitude Training – whether in equine athletes or human ones – results in remarkable adaptations occurring in the active muscles – which obviously include the heart and the diaphragm. These adaptations are simply not possible to achieve when training in normal air, no matter how long or how hard the training. It is the added stimulus provided by hypoxia that quite literally unlocks a completely new level of performance.

Study 1

Study (Part 1) / Effect of High-Intensity Training In Normobaric Hypoxia on Thoroughbred Skeletal Muscle. Nagahisa, Hiroshi, Et Al. Oxid Med Cell Longev. 2016.

Angiogenesis & Myogenesis Were Observed

  • Increase in number of capillaries

  • Muscle tissue was formed and regenerated at a faster rate

  • This leads to a more muscular horse, as well as a horse that recuperates from training and injuries quicker

Normoxic and hypoxic science paper statistics

Normal Group increased distance by

604m

Hypoxic Group increased distance by

1617m

* Myogenesis: development of muscle tissue

** Angiogenesis: Growth in muscle capillaries

Study 2

Study (Part 2) / Effect Of High-Intensity Training in Normobaric Hypoxia On Thoroughbred Skeletal Muscle. Hiroshi Nagahisa, Kazutaka Mukai, Hajime Ohmura, Toshiyuki Takahashi, and Hirofumi Miyata.

  • Running distance increased significantly after hypoxic training compared with normoxic training.

  • Muscle Capillary density and mRNA expression related to SC activation (e.g., myogenin* and hepatocyte growth factor) and angiogenesis** (VEGF-A) increased only after hypoxic training.
